Here we go, week seven brings us another two meet week. We will be at Edmonds vs Everett and Mount Lake Terrace on Thursday, and the athletes who meet the qualification standards, usually our top one, possibly two, will compete at Snohomish at the Eason Invite.
As a team we faced some adversity last week, and our team was not at full strength, we are working to correct that this week.
Our message to the athletes, we talked about being an athlete two weeks ago. Last week we will talk about a couple of traits that are important every day, not just your athletic life.
A) Definition of character
Webster’s Dictionary:
One of the attributes that make up and distinguish an individual and the complex of mental and ethical traits marking and often individualizing a person, group, or nation.
Character Counts- six pillars of character:
- Trustworthiness;
- Respect;
- Responsibility;
- Fairness;
- Caring;
- Citizenship
What is your character? — what do you do, how do you act when no one is there to observe your actions?
A) Definition of Attitude:
Webster’s Dictionary:
A mental position with regard to a fact or state; a feeling or emotion toward a fact or state;
Life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it

It’s rivalries week! Shorewood vs. Shorecrest – Thursday at Shoreline Stadium.
We are starting week six, this means the season is half way done for many athletes. We currently have 142 athletes on the roster, 108 of those athletes are eligible to compete, the rest of you, get eligible.
I will answer a couple of questions I was asked last week. 1. Why can’t parents see the meet entries before the meet on athletic.net? Answer: this is a private area for coaches. We don’t what the competition to see the information before the meet takes place. If you want to know what events your student athlete is in, ask them. We print our entries from athletic.net and post them for the athlete. Our coaches also communicate with the athlete. 2. When will the Spirit pack order be placed? Answer: The order will be placed Wednesday morning. If you have not ordered you have until Tuesday night.
We spend a lot of time talking with the athletes about their responsibilities as a student athlete and what it takes to be an athlete. Yes, every single person on the track team is an athlete and they need to understand what this means.
Obviously, the weather is having a large impact on our practices and meets. I appreciate the resilience of our coaches and our student athletes.

Under torrential showers we contested a double dual meet against Lynnwood and Meadowdale.
I especially appreciate all athletes who stepped up to help in this meet. All athletes who helped in the muddy throwing area you are to be commended!
One of the most exciting races of the meet was one of the last races. The boys 4x400m relay. We did not know it at the time, this race determined the results of the meet vs Lynnwood for the boys. Lynnwood won the race by .05 of a second. It does not get much closer than that.
Congratulations to the girls for sweeping both meets.

We are now three meets into the competition season, we’ve started to measure ourselves against the competition. The initial optimism of I will, I can, I’m going to, is now real times, heights and distances. With this comes excitement for some and disappointment for others. Some athletes need to set higher goals, others need readjust their goals. This is all part of the learning process. Remember it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish!
We will be hosting our first home meet of the season this Thursday – I’m communicating my expectations to the athletes and the parents for this and future home meets.
First our athletes – When we are at home, you are required to help out doing whatever is needed at the various event venues so the meet runs smooth. This includes eligible and ineligible athletes. You are expected to get up from the stand, go to the event venue when asked by a coach or captain. Help at the venue until you need to warm up and compete in your event. Once your event is finished PLEASE check to see – what you can do next. DO NOT pack up and leave the stadium.
It’s amazing to me how many athletes and parents asked me — “do they really need to stay for the WHOLE meet?” The answer is YES. Do you get up and leave in the middle of class or half way through the soccer, baseball, football game? I bet the answer is no – you leave when class or the game is over.
Second, parents – we would love to have you help us at the event venues, no experience necessary, we will train you. We have experienced staff running each event, additional adult helpers will ensure the meet runs smooth, safe and on schedule.
At the end of the meet the captains get everyone together for a cool down, cheer and recovery drink. This is all part of the experience that makes athletics special.
Here is the normal schedule of events for our WESCO meets. WESCO – Order of Events. Note that the schedule is rolling, the meet starts at 3:30pm. Most dual meets will be finished by 6:15pm, three way meets will finish closer to 7:00pm.

Our priority this week is to get the rest of our athletes eligible to compete. We have 73 of our 150 athletes eligible. This is “The Athletes” responsibility, when they check in each day they see exactly where they stand and the items they are missing are highlighted. There are no surprises here, we’ve informed the athlete from day one what it takes to become eligible. It’s been posted on this web site, they are reminded daily at practice.
Two items to note: 1. If the athlete misses more that four practice session in a row, before they achieve the required ten, they start counting backwards. 2. Starting this week – academics come into play big time. We will have many athletes who will be sitting out the two meets this week because they failed to understand their responsibility as “Student Athletes”
This week we jump into our first “multi meet” week. We have a three team meet with Oak Harbor and Jackson at Everett Memorial Stadium on Thursday. All eligible varsity and JV athletes will compete. This year we will score each meet as dual competitions so we can crown a league champion. When we have three teams at the meet it’s called a double dual and we will score Shorewood vs. Oak Harbor and Shorewood vs. Jackson as separate dual meets.
Saturday we will be competing in our first invite of the season, the Terrace Relays at Edmonds Stadium vs Eleven other teams. Only selected athletes will compete in this meet, we get four entries per event. We will post entries on athletic.net. Meet starts at 11:00am, athletes need to be at the stadium at 10:00am. No transportation provided.

Last Week Review:
We kicked off the season with a jamboree at Quil Ceda Stadium in Marysville vs Marysville-Pilchuck, Marysville-Getchell and Shorecrest. Our athletes handled themselves well and competed hard. It was great to see our athletes “buy into” the training program and be rewarded for their hard work. This is the time of year where we are investing in hard work and those athletes will be rewarded for their hard work as we get into the competitive season. For meet results visit www.athletic.net

Review of Last week.
What else can I say, it was an interesting week of weather, we saw snow on the round, sun in the sky and rain on our heads during the week. Were getting a lot accomplished, the athletes are adjusting to the new coaches, we continue to emphasize the preparation of the top 20% of the athletes in each event. We’re getting a very positive response from all our athletes and an unexpected dynamic it taking shape. Lots and lots of quality “peer coaching”. This magnifies the reach of the coaching staff, builds stronger team bonds and prepares a larger number of athletes for competition.
As expected, week two brings us many tired and sore athletes. We start to see a few injuries brought on by the increased level of activity, a depressed central nervous system and the cold weather. We are also starting to get a glimpse of the potential of the 2012 T-Bird team.
On Friday in the rain and cold weather we conducted our first trials in a number of events. Visit the Shorewood Time Trial meet http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/MeetResults.aspx?Meet=155270#486 for the results.
